Could you resist the two in one deal? Known as St-Martin to the French, and Sint Maarten to the Dutch
is the perfect place:division of land has given the island two very distinct personalities, and both of them capture your heart.
For 150 years the island was passed between Holland, England, France and Spain. At the end, Spain and England gave it up and French and Dutch sides realized that neither would yield easily.
After the Treaty of Concordia was signed, the island was divided in two.
Legend has it that to divide the island the two sides held a contest – a walking race between a Dutchman and a Frenchman; they set off in opposite directions to walk around the island until they met.
France received more of the island, because (according to the legend)the Dutchman stopped to have a drink now and then, which allowed the Frenchman to claim more territory.
The more realistic explanation to why France go a bigger piece of this paradise is probably due to their commanding military presence in the region at the time the treaty was signed
